OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

Mount Vernon Baptist Church has long demonstrated that ministry extends beyond the sanctuary. One of the clearest expressions of this commitment is the Mount Vernon Outreach Ministry, known as MVOM.

MVOM is a 501 c 3 nonprofit outreach ministry with a long history of helping those who have fallen regain control of their lives and become productive citizens in society. For years it served in the Vine City community and now operates from Southwest Atlanta while continuing to serve the metropolitan area. In 2015 it was incorporated as a nonprofit organization serving individuals challenged by substance abuse, homelessness, unemployment, and other societal dysfunctions.

Its mission is powerful and practical: to provide help, hope, and healing as we empower and educate.

MVOM provides help and assistance through education, counseling, substance abuse education, HIV education, recovery support, and referral resources. More than sixty individuals attend weekly support groups. An average of fifteen persons receive counseling on a monthly basis. The Training Institute serves program participants, program directors, and housing coordinators.

One of the ministry’s most significant efforts is the Annual MVOM and Product of the Power Recovery Through Christ Conference. For more than two decades, this conference has served more than fifteen hundred individuals from shelters, missions, recovery homes, local churches, and other organizations. It is held at no cost to program participants and includes free materials, free meals, and workshops led by licensed and trained professionals, medical doctors, and counselors.

MVOM leadership includes Reverend Dr. Rodney K. Turner as Advisor, Angela A. Yarbrough as President, Ron Strayhand as Vice President, Marsha Jo Albert as Treasurer, Andrea Hutchins as Secretary, Lois Stewart as Assistant Secretary, and Eugene Bridges as Liaison.

The ministry collaborates with Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Product of the Power Ministry, My Sister’s House, Gilgal Women’s Ministry, Mary Hall Freedom House, James M. Dixon Foundation, Atlanta Community Food Bank, United Way, Antioch Urban Ministries, Let Us Make Man, Salvation Army Red Shield Lodge, Benjamin E. Mays High School, Jean Childs Young Middle School, and other church and recovery support organizations.

Mount Vernon’s outreach spirit is also reflected more broadly through benevolence, recovery support, helping hands, prayer, and visible community engagement. The church does not view outreach as a side ministry. It is central to its witness and mission.

As Matthew 25 teaches, the church is called to serve Christ by serving others. Mount Vernon continues to answer that call with consistency, compassion, and faith.
