Reverend Rodney Kirk Turner was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of Rufus and Betty Turner. He is a product of the Atlanta Public School system and a graduate of the Frederick Douglas High School class of 1975. As a sociology and criminology major, Rev. Turner obtained his college education at the Historic Morehouse College. While pursuing his education at Morehouse, Rev. Turner became a Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity member and served as president for two years.
He furthered his biblical education at Carver and Beulah Heights Bible Colleges. In May 2015, Rev. Turner received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Carver College for his twenty-nine years of service work in substance abuse and outreach ministry throughout the State of Georgia and nationwide. For nine-plus years, Rev. Turner served as Pastor of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church in Roanoke, Alabama and is currently entering his twenty-second year in August 2025 as Pastor and undershepherd of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a proud father and a loving husband to former State Representative LaNett L. Stanley of Atlanta, GA.
Rev. Turner was licensed to preach in February 1990 and ordained in January 1995 at the Antioch Baptist Church North in Atlanta, Georgia by the Rev. Dr. C. M. Alexander, Pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church North and President Emeritus of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, Inc. While attending Antioch, Rev. Turner served as an associate minister and worked on the staff of Antioch for over seventeen plus years as Antioch’s Substance Abuse, AIDS, Prison Ministry and Outreach Coordinator. He was the director of Antioch’s first recovery residence for men, the Ananias House and Antioch’s first recovery residence for women, Ruth’s Place. Rev. Turner is the Founder of one of the nation’s most successful recovery ministries, Product of the Power Ministry, a Christian-based recovery ministry that addresses the needs of those suffering with substance abuse issues and other spiritual behavioral disorders. He has authored six books that address how to overcome sin and addiction from a biblical perspective. Many churches across denominational lines and other Christian organizations around the nation seeking to start a Christian-based recovery ministry or programs use Rev. Turner’s seven-step model and materials from his books on Christian recovery as their model for recovery ministry.
Rev. Turner has served on the Governor’s AIDS Task Force, the SCLC Wings of Hope Anti-Drug Taskforce, and the Fulton County Street Team and was chosen by Armac to participate in a one-year internship at Atlanta West Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center and Methadone Clinic. Rev. Turner has taught recovery classes in the urban ministries department at Beulah Heights Bible College and has served as a faculty member of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, Auxiliary to the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. Rev. Turner served for twenty-four years as a faculty member of the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, Congress of Christian Education, where he taught and lectured on Christian based recovery. He has served as lead columnist for the nationally published magazine Recovery Solutions.
Rev. Turner was a consultant and life skills counselor for twenty-four years with Clark Atlanta University and the Fulton County Judicial system as the senior counselor for Project Redirection, a special program designed to provide alternatives to incarceration for Fulton County non-violent offenders. In addition, he has worked with Juvenile offenders in DeKalb, Cobb, and Fulton Counties through Project Redirection’s youth initiatives. He has served as a chaplain for the Fulton County Jail Division for over twenty years and is a member of the Georgia Sheriff Association Chaplain’s Division.
He is currently an instructor at the Burruss State Prison in Forsyth, Georgia where he teaches men from his seven-step model of recovery from drugs and alcohol. Rev. Turner was a 2017 Inductee into the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers. He currently serves as a board member for Antioch Urban Ministries. Rev. Turner has received several awards including the 2000 Atlanta Dairy Association’s Movers and Shakers Award, the 2002 Antioch Baptist Church North’s Man of The Year and Community Service Award, the 2004 Antioch Urban Ministries Mighty Faith Award, the 2005 Concerned Black Clergy’s Community Service Award, the 2006 Gospel Choice Chosen Award and the 2012 God’s Trombone Award from Rainbow PUSH. In 2015, Rev. Turner was recognized by the Apex Museum for his work in the field of recovery and outreach ministry. In 2017, he received President Obama’s Lifetime Achievement Award for National and Community Service. In June 2019, he was chosen to serve on the Mayor’s Task Force to Reimagine the Atlanta City Detention Center as a Center for Equity. In October 2023, Rev. Turner was the Homecoming Vesper Hour Preacher at the Martin Luther King International Chapel at Morehouse College. Rev. Turner was a lead soloist at the Billy Graham Crusade held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994.
With over thirty-five years of Christ-centered recovery work and outreach initiatives, Rev. Turner has helped countless men and women turn their lives around through a right-functioning relationship with Jesus Christ. He is a leader and advocate for the disadvantaged, the hungry, and the homeless in the community, always sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Rev. Turner’s motto is, “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new,” 2nd Corinthians 5:17.
